“For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” --Hebrews 8:12
When you make a mistake, do you spend the rest of your day, week, month, or even year thinking about it?
Do you dwell on the past, reflecting about all the things you should have done differently?
That habit of holding on will only lead you further down that path of unrighteousness. But there’s good news! If we put our faith and trust in Jesus Christ, all of our mistakes will be forgiven.Jesus was God in flesh who came to earth to pay the penalty for our sins—ultimately death. He was the perfect sacrifice to save us.
God chooses not to remember our sins once we put our full trust in Jesus. Therefore, we must choose not to remember the mistakes of our past, just as Jesus does. If we dwell on the thought of our mistakes, we will continue to remember the details, and we will be unable to wholeheartedly move forward. If we clear the thought of our mistakes out of our head whenever we think of it, then eventually we will remember less and less! Since God Himself forgives us, we must not need to forgive ourselves; His forgiveness is all we need!
No matter how terrible our sin, his forgiveness is greater.
“As far as the east is from the west, so far He removed our transgressions from us.” —Psalms 103:12
Just as well, living and only thriving in the successes of our past can hinder us just as much as our mistakes.
Are you only proud of how close you were to God? If this success is the only reason why you feel fruitful in your walk with Christ, then this can be a hamper your faith just as well. Where are you today with God?
When running a race, the runner does not look behind themselves, they always look ahead. This is because if the runner chooses to look behind, then they will slow themselves down from reaching the finish line. In the same way, life is a race and we are also running after our final destination—to be like Christ and to spend an eternity with Him. What a wonderful thing to be striving for!
Now that you know how Jesus forgave you the very instant you put your faith and trust in Him, here’s what to do next. Let's see Step 3!
*Note, step three will be published on January 19.
